A recent study indicates that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such medications must be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of hunger.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle management.
