The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
