Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that come with any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience today.
