No fewer than 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
