Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
